Irene and her costume sketches
It’s always interesting to see a photo of Irene
with several of her costume sketches, while
trying to identify the individual designs.
It’s a shame so few of these have survived. As
with most designers, these artifacts were considered
expendable after a movie was finished. Like the
costumes themselves, most have perished. Irene’s
costume sketches are always identifiable. She
may not have drawn all of the them, but they all
bear her unmistakable style and usually her bold
signature.
Irene is my grand-aunt, and admired for her work in women's fashion and Hollywood costume design. Her talent as a successful clothing designer in Los Angeles led to her long career as a costume designer for many great films in Hollywood.. until her sudden death in 1962. I hope you enjoy your visit.. ~ Karlyn
Christian, my mother has a few of her sketches framed.. they are beautiful. I imagine, after Irene’s death, many sketches were probably given away.. I can’t imagine anyone just getting rid of them, but I don’t know. What a shame that would be.
