They are from 1941 when Irene still had her own label at Bullock’s. Two are signed by Adele Balken, who was her sketch artist at the time.

Irene’s sketch for Marlene Dietrich

Irene sketch for Marlene Dietrich My thanks to Bret for sharing this wonderful press photo of an Irene sketch for Marlene Dietrich from “The Lady Is Willing” – 1942.

The back of the sketch reads:

"An unusually chic town suit, designed by Irene, is worn by Marlene Dietrich in Columbia picture “The Lady Is Willing.” Black silk bengaline is the fabric, cut with a narrow skirt and flared peplum jacket, it embodies the high style notes of the season. A vest of white bugle beads adds further elegance to the costume. (MARLENE DIETRICH #13)

Irene’s Sketch for Doris Day

irene-lentzcopyrightprotected-sketch-doris-day-lover-come-back-300 I know that Irene did many costumes for Doris Day. This is one of the sketches for the movie Lover Come Back.

Thank you to Christian for supplying this copy for us.

I believe Lover Come Back (1961) was the last movie that Irene and Doris Day worked together on before her death.

On IMDB, you can view more photos of Doris Day and scenes from the movie.

A Typical Day with Irene

Irene at MGMThis is a photo from my personal collection. On the back of the original photo is a typed message that reads..

A TYPICAL DAY WITH IRENE, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s talented executive designer, is proof that her work has just begun when she completed a sketch for some star. Each drawing means hour upon hour of discussion, plans, and changes before it finally is seen on the screen.

Irene begins her day by discussing sketches she has prepared for the forthcoming picture with one of her associate designers. They go over such things as style, fabric, color and the suitability of the costume to a particular star.
